The Governor-General has been advised that the Ring has been graciously pleased, on the occasion of. the New Year, to confer the following honors for distinguished services rendered in NewZealand: — KNIGHT BACHELOR. The Honorable Theophilus Cooper, Judge of the Supreme Court. George Hunter, Esq., M.P. for Waipawa. C.M.G. (Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George.) Dr. Ernest Augustus Boxer, President of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association. ' bavin Macaulay Hamilton, Esq., formerly Private Secretary to the Earl of Liverpool, as Governor-General of New Zealand. Sir Theo. Cooper, K. 8., whose approaching retirement from the Supreme Court was announced recently, has been for a considerable time in charge of the Auckland district. Born in Surrey, England, in I'Bso, lie came to New Zealand by the ship Gertrude, arriving at Auckland in 1863. He was, from 1865 to 1869, employed as a compositor in the Daily Southern Cross printing office, and was called tojthe Bar in 1878. He was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand in 1901, and waa President of the Court of Arbitration from that ysar until 1903. Noted for the clarity of his judgments, his record on the Bench has been one of duty well done. Itfr George Hunter, M.P., K. 8., is th 6 well-known run-holder who has ao ably represented Waipawa in the House uf Representatives. He was first elected Parliament in 1897. Mr. Hunter is a son of the late Mr. George Hunter, who was the first Mayor of Wellington. He has been prominently identified with many philanthropic movements, and has rendered valuable assistance in connection with the scheme of settling returned soldiers on the land.

Dr. Boxer, C.M.G., who hails from Hastings, has, since its inception, taken a keen and lively interest in the work of' the Returned Soldiers’ Association. And not only that, he has been indefatigable in his aid to any movement having for its object the furtherance of the welfare of returned men. Mr. Gavin M. Hamilton. C.M.G.. during his term in New Zealand, made himself most popular with all sections of the community by the courtesy and consideration he showed to all those with whom he came in contact in his officis 1 capacity. BARONETS (21).Admiral Sir Cecil Burney, who was commanding the second and third fleets on the outbreak of war, and who played a distinguished part ia the war. Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the distinguished soldier, who has devoted many years to the organisation of the boy scout movement, of which he was the originator. KNIGHTS (42). Mr. Charles F. Gill, ICC., formerly counsel to the Treasury, and now one of the most familiar figures in notable cases in the criminal courts. Mr. Martin Harvey, the distinguished English "actor. Mr. Rylands, President of the. Federation of British Industries. Dr. Spugge, editor of The Lancet. Dr. Williams, editor ’ of the British Medical Journal. COMPANIONS OF HONOR The Rev. John Clifford, who began life in a lace factory, .and then became a leader of Nonconformity. Mr. John Ellerman, the head of the wellknown shipping firm known as tlw Ellerman Line.
