BOXING.
HEENEY BEATS GLEESON. KEENAN THE NEW LIGHT-WEIGHT CHAMPION. Auckland, December, 31. Two interesting contests were seen on the concluding night of the Northern Boxing Association carnival. * The principal attraction was the middleweight professional contest, in which Jack Heeney, of Gisborne, met Les Gleeson, of Sydney. The bout went the full fifteen rounds, with Heeney always the better of the pair. He’ scored frequently in the close fighting, and occasionally used a heavy right to much advantage. Gleeson boxed cleverly at times, but the decision—a popular one —went to Heeney on points. Gus Vann and .Tack Keenan met to decide the professional light-weight championship ot th© Dominion, and the issue was never in doubt. Keenan went for the holder of the title right from the commencement, and a fast and at times exciting battle ensued. Keenan punished Venn rather badly, and at the 7 end of the seventh round the latter’s seconds threw in the towel.
