THE RACING DESCRIBED. NOTES BY "MOTUROA." (By Wire—Special to News.) Palmerstoii X., Last Xight. The racing was again interesting, the fields were very large, and in the majority of races the finishes were close. Minsk dropped out of the Whitmore Handicap, leaving • seven runners. Prince Martian was an odds on order, but Sweet Song also had a bJg following. The race was characterised by a wretched exhibition of riding by apprentices. Mlsaiove and Prince i wore firs: away, but the former los: her jjusiflon turning out of Hid straight. Royal Gift showed out for a couple of furlongs, and then American Beauty led from Sweet Song. The latter pair led into the straight, but left the rails, allowing Prince MartlanMo get through .and win by half a length. Misslove was a 'similar distance in front of Sweet Song. Bufflt was fourth. j Achllleon was the only absentee from thr hurdles, a fine flold of seventeen going to the 1 post. Old Gold and Explorer were most artmired. Hautawa was first away, and Was Joined by Whetokl into the straight. The same pair led past the stand from FalstafT and Signysian. Signysian led Hautawa, FalstafT and Explorer along the back, but Hautawa. headed him nearing the bend, where Explorer joined issue. Explorer ran clean away in tl'e run home. Hautawa being well clear of Signysian, with FalstafT fourth and Yigilo, who cufue from a long way back, fifth. Princess Pat and Cremo de Mentho declined their engagements in the Juvenile Handicap, leaving sixteen runners. Dissertation, Thinedln, Scion, and Backsheesh weve ail fancied. There was a long delay at the post owing to the fractitiousness of the youngsters, and the field went off in straggling fashion, ram was left at the post. Tommy Rot and Backsheesh got out with a good break and led into the straight. Tommy Rot kept going long enough to reach the post half a length In t'roht of Dunedin, with Backsheesh a close third, and Dissertation and Scion next. All started in the Liverpool Handicap, Isabel j again being hotly fancied, with Moutoa Ivan-1 ova and Nobleman also jvell supported. Dema-1 gogue broke tl:e line, with Rouen next, but' going out of the straight Hyttus ran up to 1 the leader, and Isabel and Rouen wore l handy. Moutoa Ivanova and Hyttus were in front four furlongs from home, with the field bunched. Borealis temporarily flattered his backers at the home turn, but the finish was left to Rouen, Punka, and Bonnie Maid, who finished In that order, necks apart, after a great finish. Moutoa Ivanova was fourth, and Nobleman, who was blocked, a close fifth. All carded for the Westbury Handicap were saddled up, but something went wrong with Magistrate, who was 1 withdrawn, leaving seventeen runners. Bacchante bolted once round the course prior to the start. Canyon and Gallia, were backed solidly. All unoved off the line, but Samarang and Automoana. had a big break along the back. Barleycorn and Automoana headed for home together, t!:e former winning with a lot in hand. Mllltalre was a close third, and Bacchante fourth.

The pen was put through Bonnie Briar's name in the Clandeboye Handicap, Pente being a screaming hot order. Potentiality led a bunched lot out of the straight, and allowed tire way to Pente. Railand and Eaonui along the back, with .Kitin rid last. Pente took the lead in the straight, and won easily by a length from Paonui.' Potentiality was a close third, and Jutland fourth, Jutland came in for a hostile reception on returning to scale.

La Paloma declined her Hack Welter engagement, and War Baby, Minsk, Strategy, and Stutter monopolised attention. A surprise awaited! .'backers, however, for after Strategy had set 1 a solid pace to the home turn, Blissfulness assumed the lead, only to go under to Passenger in the last few strides. Another outsider, Convention, was third, and Minsk was fourth. Dunedin was the only scratching in the Kawau Handicap. Punters made it a recovery stakes, Warplane going over the two thousand mark, Bonnie Briar, Nursing Sister, liiah, Hymarty,, and Acre all being well supported. Inah pushed ofT in front, followed by Bonnie Briar and Nursing Sister. The order was the same to the distance, where Warplane came fast and won all out by a length, Inah beati;#: Bonnie Briar by two lengths. Acre was fourth.

In tl:e tolallsator eighty-four hands will be employed. The race track is in Arst-class order, and some fast times should be put up.

TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") There will be racing, at Ellerslie, Stratford, Marton, Hastings, jind a host of minor places to-morrow, New Year's Day, hut the majority of Taranaki sports will roll up at Stratford, where excellent racing Is promised. Special trains hare been arranged to carry patrons from all parts, and, given line weather, the attendance should lie very large. The first race starts at 11.45 a.m. The Maiden Plate, five furlongs, is a race for horses that hiue not won a raco at time of starting, which bars Talata. On New Plymouth form Wolthea, Velociform, and lady Tolly should be well backed. The Tarllii Welter, 7 furlongs, will keep punters busy, but if Malingerer and Trombone go to the post they should not lack support.

If Marqueteur starts in the Stratford Cup the public should not overlook his forward running at Awapuni on Tuesday. Depredation is another that can run out a good ten furlongs. Te Toa and Maori Tikanga will measure strides again in the Ohura Hack Hurdles, 1-/4 miles.

Inah stowed a lot of pace at Awapuni on Monday, and another Douglas Handicap candidate in form Is Egmont Pari;

Warrawoe and Malingerer appear to be nicely placed In the Midhirst Hack Handicap, 8% furlongs.

Simon will be running on as strongly as! anything at the finish of the Mfthoe Welter. A great crowd of sprinters figure In tlie j Railway Hack Handicap, and followers of form may find it hard to decide between | Flying Master, Jovial, and Irayuka when ma!;- | ing their inrestments. j Judging by the crowds which attended Die, Manawatu meeting this weelt, the appo'n;ments at Marton are bound to be overtake 1 on Saturday and Monday. On recent 'form. Alternation, NoMenuin, Solftmellrt. Asterina. Moutoa Ivanova, Viglla, Rational, Mattack. n»- ! . All Cerise should be worth watching at tK ] meeting. I |
