AMERICAN TRADE.

A GREAT SLUMP. By Telegraph.—rress Assn.—Copyright. New York, Dec. 20. A significant sign of the times is that the main Ford plant at Detroit, employing 5000 hands, has closed for sr. indefinite period. Many of the higher priced motor plants in the larger American cities have already closed or are running half time. The conditions of unemploy-. ment in some centres are very severe. The Labor leaders claim that the conditions are partly fictitious, the purpose being the reduction of wages.

In their efforts to obtain cash big storeg throughout the United States and CanaSa are cutting prices 20 to 00 per cent., while Wall Street lias seen a vast slump in prices. Conditions generally appear to be righting themselves, and the autumn pessimjsm is giving way to a feeling of optimism that things will improve when the winter is over.—Renter.
