ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
A CHILD DROWNED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Levin, Dec. 29. Douglas Butt, the infant son of Reginald Butt, was accidentally drowned in a stream near his father's house yesterday. The child wandered away while his parents were milking and, though missed immediately, it was too late to save him.
SUICIDE FROM PIER. Christchurch, Dec. 29. What has the appearance of a ease of suicide occurred this morning at Sumner. A man was seen on the pier and announced his intention of testing the depth of the water to a resident, who hastened to inform the police. On his way he met another resident, who proceeded to the pier, but the man had riisoppeared, leaving behind part of his clothing. In the coat pocket was a post office savings bank, book issued to John Baird, care"J. Studholme, Hinds, also money, notes and silver. A pocketbook contained messages stating that the writer was the victim of an overwhelming vice, but had alwnys lived an honest life and wished his few debts paid.
