THE CHEESE MARKET.
GOOD PROSPECTS PROMISING. The somewhat depressing feeling created in some minds by the cheese position will he relieved .by the news received by Mr. G. H. Buekeridge, of Hawera, from his principals in London, Messrs. H. A. Lane and Co., Ltd., that the demand for Canadian cheese is firm, and that the prioo has advanced to between l.")0s arul l.'ifls. Speaking to a Star representative on the question, Mr. Buekeridge said that he had held all along that there was no call for pessimism, He had estimated that there would be a shortage in cheese, due partly to the cold and trying weather in v tho early spring, and also to the loss of stock experienced by "many farmers. Many large factories bad decided to change, or had already changed to butter, and that would make the position better still. He understood that where a short time since offers for cheese were not forthcoming from wholesale buyers, Is Id was now being offered. The guarantee of 2s Gd to butter producers made the butter position quite good, except where men had speculated in land at a price to support which it would be necessary to secure 3s per lb There was no doubt that this speculative element, in the hope that .this high price would be obtained, had done a lot of harm to the farming industry and to the country generally. To counteract its influence the banks had adopted a tightening-up policy, the result of which would be for the ultimate benefit of the Dominion. 4
