THE HOLIDAYS.
■SHOPS EE-OPEN THIS MORNING. NEW YEAR ATTRACTIONS. The Christmas holiday period virtually ended yesterday and, with one or two exceptions, business will be resumed in Taranaki as usual to-day, and the towns of the province will resume something approaching normal conditions till the New Year holidays at the end of the week.
The New Year period will provide ail' other round of holiday fixtures. Frij das. will be New Year's Eve, and the passing of tlie old year generally holds some fascination for the public, and is often recognised in unorthodox manner by jovial spirits. The chief holiday attraction in Taranaki is the Stratford Racing Club's ar.ual meeting on Saturday and Monday. The Nganmtu seaside picnic on "New Year's Day has always been a popular outing, and given fine weather there should be a large gathering on this occasion. On Monday, January 3, representatives of the North Taranaki cricket division and a South Taranaki team will'meet In a game at Hawera. This will be followed on January 7 and S bv the WanganuiTaranaki match at New Plymouth Both fixtures will no doubt be the centre of interest for a large number of followers of yie game.
