• ARREST OF EX-TOWN CLERK. ALLEGATIONS OF FORGERY. Masterton, Dec. 22. The rumors that have been current for some time regarding alleged irregularities in bookkeeping -for the Masterton Borough Council culminated to-day in the information being received by the police that James Archer, late town clerk and engineer to the local council, and now engineer to the newly-formed Hauraki Plains County Council, had been arrested at Paeroa, and indicted on charges of forgeries. He was remanded to appear at Wellington on December 30th, when it is likely that a further postponement will be aeked for to enable the police to collect additional information concerning the charges.
