A Wanganui land agent, when discussing the matter of land sales with a reporter, stated that a few farm deals had been transacted recently and included some very good ones. Of course it had to lie remembered that the autumn was the recognised season for the majority of sales, and until that time it would he difficult to arrive at definite conclusions. Although the banks had tightened up on their advances, it was evident from the nature of the deals referred to above that there was still plenty of capital held for investment by private individuals. Only on Monday a local resident had approached the agent with a view to investing a substantial sum. Just below H&wora on' Sunday, a fishing party caught a stingaree' and decided to try the experiment of usln? its liver as a bait for sharks. It may hi here mentioned that it has been saic that the liver of a shark, used as- t bait, will attract any sharks very quick' ly to the spot. Apparently the live: ft a stingarce had the same effect. On this occasion it was compressed to omit the oik, then bound up in a cloth with a couple of hooks, attached to a line and thrown into not more than three feet of water. In less than ten minutes a ten-foot shark appeared, took the bait, but cut the line immediately above it and escaped. Within a few minutes two more big brutes arrived in search of the bait, having been attracted by the smell of the oil. This indicates that fairly big sharks must be cruismg along the coast close in to shore, so that it would be well if bath' ers during the holiday did not venture too far out into the breakers,—Star. 0 n « of most attractive displft/i this Christmas is that made by the Net* Zealand Clothing Factory, Devon Streel Central.
