SOLDIERS' AND CIVILIANS' CLUB. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Dee. 17. » The Soldiers' Club is now an established fact. Although the building is small compared to other towns, the provisional committee deserves great credit for, bringing its work to success. Last Friday evening a meeting.was held for the purpose of electing officers on a permanent basis. Mr. J. Parry occupied the chair, and traversed the operations of the committee from the time they interested themselves in the matter. He also gave great praise to the work of the ladies, without whose help they would not have got so much money or gained such practical sympathy.
Rev. Mr. Gavin also spoke, and referred to Mr. Parry's earnestness and abiltty, and he boped the Club would prove a boon to the young men of the town.
The election of officers resulted: Patron, the Mayor of the town; president, Mr. J. Parry; vice-presidents, Revs. Gavin and Lawrence, and R. Fairweather; committee, Messrs. R. J. Pennington, A. J. Canton, A. Jones, E. Clare, A. Rowe, H. Travis, Roj Pennington, C. Cole, G. Westerman, H. .1011, A. Hawkin3, R. B. Nicholls, F. Patten, R. Kirby, R. Butcher, C. Tate, S. Travis and a representative from the Returned Soldiers' Association; secretary pro -tern, Mr. G. Banks; treasurer pro tern, Mr. C. Tate; auditor, Mr. Banks.
A discussion ensued on the amount of subscription, which was finally resolved to be 30s.
Other matter* in the conduct of the club and the formation of a gymnasium were discussed.
WAITARA SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the committee was held on Monday, Mr. T. R. Ford presiding.
The headmaster reported that a good deal of sickness was prevalent amongst Hie pupils, especially those in the infant room, as many as 40 pupils bein<* absent. "
Ihe average for the past quarter was 20..>, and for the year was such as to adversely affect the standard required to maintain the stall at its present number. Under the circumstances the headmaster asked that the committee request the board to make the allowance provided for in the regulations. The headmaster brought under the notice of the committee the fine record for attendance established by two of the pupils (Norman Ford and Hazel Johnstone), neither of whom had missed a single attendance for the past six years The committee decided to recommend the hoard,to grant a special certificate and on its own account the committee will award eacli pupil a special prize
CLIFTON ROWING CLUB. .. Tlic above Chili held its annual meet-' ing on Monday, Mr. Geo. Marshall occupying the chair.
