THE STRIKE.
SHIPPING HELD UP. BECOMING MORE SERIOUS. SPREAD TO LABORERS FEARED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn—Copyright. Received Dec. 20, 10.30 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 20. The stewards' strike is becoming more serious.
The owners are employing a strikebreaking crew on the steamer Marella. It is now expected the strike will spread to the wharf laborers.
The strike has . ;o spread to interState cargo carriers, while the stewards on two vessels at Newcastle are giving notice. The Union Company is racing against time with the Moeraki, which is due to-night. If the vessel arrives in time there is a good' chance of dispatching her to Tasmania before the stewards' notice expires.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
TRIAL OF STRENGTH PROBABLE. Sydney, Dec. 20. The prospects of a settlement of the stewards strike are more slender. More steamers have been thrown idle\ and trade along the coast is becoming paralysed.
Some union officials* are of opinion that the Steamship Owners' Federation will seize the opportunity for a trial of strength with certain maritime unions which have been harassing them for months past. * Received Dec. 21, 1 a.m. Sydney, Dec. 20. Tlib Moeraki reached port at nine o'clock to-night.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
