THE HALF-HOLIDAY.
GROCERS CLOSE THIS WEEK. COMPULSION UNDER AWARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. According to the provisions of ths. new grocers' award no employee in a grocery establishment can be employed after 'l2 o'clock on the day of the statutory half-holiday, and this will mean that the grocers of Taranaki will have to observe the usual half-holiday this week, even though next Saturday, being Christmas Day, is a full holiday. As there appeared to be some doubt regarding the matter, Mr. John Orr, of Stratford, communicated with the Secretary for Labor, pointing out the hardship that would be imposed if grocers were compelled to close on Thursday afternoon this week. To-night lie received a reply stating that clause 5 of the. Taranaki Industrial District Grocers' Award provided that, notwithstanding the provision of section 19 of the Shops and Offices Act, no worker shall be employed after 12 o'clock on the statutory" half-Tioliday. The effect of this will be that the grocors of Taranaki will have to observe their usual half-holiday when all other businesses will be permitted to remain open.
