Rev. J. A. McKenzie, of Petone, lias been elected Moderator of the Wellington Presbytery. Cable advice was received yehterday that Dr. T. A. Milroy, formerly of Manaia, was leaving England yesterday on his return to New Zealand.

Mr. G. H. Pope, of Urenui, wan last night appointed, by the New Plymouth High Schools Board to the position j of preparatory master at the Boys' High School.

At last night's meeting of the New Plymouth Higii -Schools Board a resolution of sympathy was passed with the relatives ot the late Mr. Hickman Russell, who had acted as the Board's arbitrator.-

At Wanganu'i on Thursday night Mr. J. Aitken, who lias been a teacher for over 50 years, twenty years of which have been spent at Victoria Avenue School, received a number of presentations from parent;? and children, including a cheque for £S.">. Mr. L. C. F>.dilcn. chairman of the New Plymouth High Schools Board, last night intimated his. intention of resigning the position of .chairman. Members spoke in high terms of Mr. Sladden's work as chairman, and regretted that he could not see his.way'to accept office for a further term..

Captain Arthur Allen arrived in New Plymouth last night after twelve months' tour, on 'behalf of Dr. Barnardo's Homes, in the Wellington and Wairarapa districts. In Wellington and suburbs the captain gave thirty recitals to crowded houses, and early in the New Year lie has been requested to make a return visit to Wellington, Masterton, Dannevirkc, Feathernton and Carterton. The funeral of the late Mrs. Ann Kirkwood, of Stratford, took place on Sunday afternoon and was largely attended. The cortege left the Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Father Maples conducted the funeral rites at the church and at the graveside in Kopuatawn Cemetery. Majiy wreaths and tokens of esteem were received by the familv.

Mr. J. H. fiunsor. (Mayor of Auckland) has been requested by practically all the members of the council to stand for a fourth time. It was said that no Mayor in the whole annals of the city had put more work into the affairs of the citizens than the present occupier of the position. They all felt that if Mr. Gunson would stand for re-election it would be for the benefit of the whole city. Mr. Gunson will consider the request during the Christmas recess. Sub-Inspector Win. Mathieson, who has been promoted to the rank of Inspector and transferred to Gieymouth. was tendered a civic farewell at Dunedin yesterday (says a Press telegram). Eulogistic references were made by tho Mayor and others to his ability and impartiality as a police officer, and regret wa:f oppressed at his departure and hopes entertained that he would retTfrn to Dunedin shortly on still further promotion. Mrs. Mathieson was presented with a substantial wallet of banknotes.

The following transfers and promotions in the Lands and JVeds Department have been announced:—Mr. P. Dalrymple, of Duiiedin, becomes depu-ty-registrar of deeds,.snd assistant land registrar at Christchureh; Miss P. E. McMillan, of Auckland, takes a similar office, at Dtmedin; Mr. A. H. Fletcher, of Christchureh, becomes second assistant land registrar at Auckland; Mr. W. N. Haire, of Napier, goes to Wellington as deputy-registrar of deeds and second assistant land registrar; Mr. C. L. Harvey, of Auckland, goes to Napier as deputy-registrar of deeds and assistant land registrar; and Mr. G. H. Seddon, of Wellington, becomes fourth assistant land registrar at Auckland. The proposal to establish a memorial to the late Mr. John Bollard, who for 18 years represented Eden in the House of Representatives, is being enthusiastically' supported at Avondalo. The members of Mr. Bollard's family, on being approached on the subject by the.Hon. G. J. Garland, M.L.C., expressed the wish that the proposed memorial take the form of scholarships in perpetuity for pupils from the Avondale school district. A public meeting is to be called at Avondale early in the New Tfear, at which it is hoped several members of Parliament will be present. The sum aimed at is £SOO, of which £l5O is secured by grant from the Government. The death, occurred on Sunday morning at New Plymouth of Mrs. Ann Parker, widow of the late Mr. Joseph Parker, aged 8(i years. The deceased lady came out to New Zealand with her father, the late Mr. Boyes, when sho was 11 years old and lived at Motueka for many years." Some years after her marriage the family eame to reside at New Plymouth, where the late Mrs. Parker was well-known and highly respected by a large circle of friends. She leaves a family and three daughters, Mrs. Martolli and Mrs. Kelsey, of Wellington, and Mrs..W. Berridge, of New Plymouth": anil four sons, Messrs. John and Frank Parker (Nelson), H. Parker (New Plymouth), and Joseph Parker (Wellington).
