Major Labarte, a returned soldier, shot iiis wife dead and also shot a> policeman dead. A number of police were kept at bay for two hours before they succeeded in effecting his arrest, Received Dec. 19, 6.5 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 19.
Since his return from the war Major Labartc had suffered from pains in tha head and'was strange in his manner. After shooting his wife in the presence of her maid he telephoned the police and informed them of the tragedy. When they arrived he opened fire upon them, and shot Constable Mitchill dead.
KeinfSreemonts surrounded the house, but they were kept at bay by Labarte's fusilada. Eventually a constable mattaged to effect an entrance while Labarte was watching other police, «end'escap« ing. two shots discharged at him as he olosedj he managed to overpower Labarte after a desperate struggle.—Aus.-N.Z.
