TOBACCOS MORE PLENTIFUL. RAPID DROP IN POTATOES. We are indebted to a New Plymouth merchant for the following brief summary of the market conditions affecting Taranaki:— ' C. and B. Essences.—An advance of 3s a dozen is reported. This will bring the retail value here up to 1/6 per bottle. Pie Fruits.—Contrary to general expectations one of tiie leading packers has issued prices for 1921 at' rate 9 very much in advance of present prices, 38s per dozen wholesale being quoted for gallon tins. Maize.—A fair quantity is being used as a result of price being reduced 2s a bushel, thus making it a comparatively cheap fowl food. Bacon.—Thougli supplies are still very short there is a feeling that prices will drop shortly. It is reported that the buying price of pigs is being reduced to 7d. Tobacco.—Supplies of all cigarette tobaccos are more plentiful, ttiough dark kinds are still scarce. It is expected the position will be much better in a week or two. The alarming rises recently reported by the Press are not as serious as suggested, as the brands affected are practically unsaleable in this district. The big rise was in Welcome Nugget, Guinea Gold cigarettes, Three Castle Magnums and Super Magnums (sizes not asked for here). Except for Old Judge tobacco, which shows a small increase, it is unlikely that the retail prices of any standard lines will be affected. New Potatoes.—Market is dropping rapidly, and Waik&to potatoes for next week delivery will be down to 2d per lb • retail.
