The Assembly amended the Fair Rent Bill providing that owners of houses must go to the Court for permission before raising the rents of houses. Melbourne, Dec. 10. The Commonwealth Sheep-Owners' j Association have decided to grant an eight hour day to the stewards and pantrymen. Melbourne, Dee. 10. Unemployment is rife in many industries, notably the boot, tanning, confectionery, rubber ad some branches of wool and ■clothing industries. It is stated to be the worst for twenty years. Mr. Cook denied the cable stating that the Commonwealth was contemplating a ten-million loan. Sydney, Dec. 10. The Amateur Boxing Committee refuses permission to Harold Hardwick to be reinstated as an amateur. The Legislative Council read the second time the Increased Salaries Rill by 28 votes to 10. The third reading was carried on the voices without amendment. In the Assembly, Mr. Cann, introducing the 44-hour Bill, said eighty industries were already working 44: bourß. He urged employers and employees where practicable mutually to arrange to work a little longer each day and abolish Saturday work. The second reading was carried on the voices.
