BOXING.

TOURNAMENT AT ELTHAM. SEENAN BEATS RUTHERFORD. (From Our Own Correspondent.! Eltham. Last Might. A very successful boxing tournament was held in the Town Hall to-night, under the auspices of the recently-formed Eltham' Boxing Association. There was a large attendance, Including boxing -enthusiasts from all parts of Taranaki. In addition to Hie professional contest, four amateur bouts or four thrce-mlnute rounds were staged. Mr C 11. dimming, of Eltham, was the referee' The big event of the tournament was the professional lightweight contest of 15 rounds for, a purse of £2OO, which wjs fought'between Mick Rutherford, 9.9 (Australia), and ■lack Keenan. 9.10 (of Auckland). The'fight went the full distance, and was .marked bins cleanness and good display of sportsmanship throughout. It was a. case of a boxer versus a fighter, and although Rutherford showed great skill as a boxer Keenan's heavy blows were too much for him. Up to the eleventh round the fight remained fairly evoti, with Keenan slightly in tho lead, but from then on Keenan had tho upper hand, and got the decision comfortably, the verdict being loudly applauded. A special exhibition between George Cook, 13.0, and his trainer, Harry Sandow, 13.t)', opened the tournament. George Cook'afterwards gave an Interesting exhibition of his training methods, including shadow sparring, skipping, and body exercises. Following are the results of the amateur bonis : Featherweight.—Humphries, 8.7!-', (Eltham) beat Grlmwood, 8.4 (Eltham). ", Whithorn 8.10 (Auckland), beat Dlgnan, 8.6 (Auckland).—The referee ordered two extra rounds to be fought before he gave his decision. Welter-weight. Fitzsiimmons, 10.12% (Matapu), beat Humphries, 10.11%. Catch-weight.—Canulo (Stratford)" beat Mulllon (Auckland) had things all his own way after the first round, doing much damage with his uppcrruts, and the referee stopped the fight in the last round.
