WEST END GALA DAY.

AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS. The weather, though dull yesterday, remained fine, consequently there was a large attendance at Kawaroa Park wherp a gala was held in connection with the West End School. There was much to amuse old and young, all the appointments of the Kawaroa Park Committee having been placed at the disposal of the gala committee, included among these being the high glide, a new innovation at the park, proving an irresistible attraction to the children. A varied programme of sports, under an energetic committee comprising Messrs. J. S. S. Medley, R. J. Deare, W. H. Broome, J. Hamilton, D. P. Evans, and E. H. Rountree, was got off during the day, the events being keenly Contested, whilst the novelty items, including pillow-fight-ing, blindfold boxing, apple bobbing, bun and lemonade races, etc., created considerable amusement.

The various stalls, etc., all did good business, and it is calculated that the proceeds of the afternoon well total £l5O. The principal items were: Gates (Messrs. Coad, Hawker., and Brokenshire) £53, clothes stall (Mrs. Evans, Misses Mynott and Anthony) £l3 7a 7d, produce stall (Mrs. Johnston) £6 4s 2d, jumble and toy (Misses O'Brien, Bullard and Barnes) £lO lis lOd, lolly stall (Mrs. Beale, Misses Boyde and Pitcaithly) £9 10s lOd, soft drinks and fruit (Mr. T. Pettv and boys) £7 4s Gd, doll stall (Misses' Jemiaon and K. Anthony) £ls 4s 6d. In connection with the doll stall doll dressing competitions were held by the girls of the school, resulting as follows: Class A, Eileen Smith 1, Mary Garcia special; class B, Greta Jenkins 1; class C, Stella Jemison 1, Jean Smith special; doll's set, Alan Woodham 1, A. Scott special. The afternoon tea, in charge of the Jvawaroa Park Ladies' Committee under the supervision of Mrs. Oliver, realised £l2 2s. Sideshows comprised cocoanut shy (Messrs. Y. Hoskin and Scoble) £8 5 .6d, liigli glide (Messrs Bcal and Broome) £G 10s Bd, fish pond (Mr. Moore) £8 3s 2d, and darts (Mr. Picard). j

Competitions resulted as follows: Iced cake, Mrs. M. Bree, Vogeltown; weight of cake (61b 12Joz), Mrs. W. McIndoe, Hine Street; doll'? cot, Mr. T. VV. Rolston; rocking horse, Miss 8.-Lobb. During the afternoon the New Plymouth Citizens' junior band was present, under Mr. F: W. G. McLeod, and rendered an enjoyable programme The arrangements for the gala were very complete and reflect credit on the committee, of which Messrs. Medley and Beal were joint chairmen and Mr.-W. J. Bennett secretary. There was a crowded attendance at the dance which was held in the Kawaroa bungalow last night, when a most enjoyable time was spent, Mr. J Cross making an efficient M.C., whilst excellent music was provided by Miss Kita Sole.
