TOBACCO DEARER.
WHOLESALE BATES INCREASED. RETAIL RISE COMING. An advance in the retail price of most classes of tobacco may be expected shortly. The wholesale price has already increased, especially in plug tobaccos, which in some lines have advanced from Is 10y s d to 2s per lb. Only a slight rise has so far taken place in cigarettes, but an early revision of prices is expected. In response to inquiries by a Daily News, reporter yesterday, a New Plymouth wholesale dealer stated the rise in prices was mainly due to an alteration in business methods and a general advance in and a scarcity of all tobaccos. Under the new system the retailer may purchase a case of one clnsß of tobacco only, or such smaller quantity as may suit his requirements, and stocks so purchased will not be held by the wholesalers to be drawn off., as required as under the old system. The majority of retailers are unable to buy a whole case of one class of tobacco, as it would take a considerable time to dispose of such a quantity, so that the increased cost of purchasing in small quantities will be passed on to the consumer.
The increased prices will take effect over the whole Dominion, as an arrangement has been arrived at between all wholesalers.
