SLANDER ALLEGED
MR. SMITH AND PARK BOARD. A STATEMENT RESENTED. THREAT OP COURT PROCEEDINGS. At last night's meeting of the Pukekura Park Board, a letter was received from the late curator of the park (Mr. W. W. SmithJ stating that he was" instituting an action^in the Supreme: Court against the Board's honorary secretary (Mr. P. E. Stainton) "for, falsehood, trickery, and slander embodied in the article published in the local papers on November 10, 1920." Mr. Smith's letter continued: "After nearly thirteen years* honorable service to the Board, and having given unsparing time to the welfare of the park, such a document could not be permitted to pass without being dealt with by the Supreme Court." The letter referred to by Mr. Smith was authorised by the Board for publication as setting out the Board's position in connection with Mr. Smith's resignation.
It was decided that the letter be referred to the Board's solicitors, and that they be empowered to accept any writ on behalf of the Board.
