BOROUGH BY-ELECTION.

SELECTION OF COUNCILLOR. j MR. J. KIBBY RETURNED. A poll of burgesses in New Plymouth yesterday in connection with the election of a candidate to fill a vacancy on the Borough Council resulted in the return of Mr. J. Kibby, who defeated the other nominee, Mr. A. E. Watkins, by 2U7 votes. The poll was a small one, the number of votes cast being only 673. Lack of interest on the part of the burgesses may be accounted for by the fact that the term of the incoming candidate in tins instance is only a short one, as the periodical" borough elections take place, next April. The main booth was at the Whiteley Hall, Liardet Street. The final figures were announced about 7.20, and the returning officer (Mr. R. Day) then made the formal declaration of Mr. Kibby's return. Detank of the voting are: — Kibbv. Watkins. Whiteley ......... 103 45 Crocker's 101 .10 Fitzroy ~ 78 7 Devon. St. W. ....... 52 40 St. Aubyn , 10 34 Moturoa ~. -. 0 7 Westown : 10 4 Standish Hill 11 30 Frankley Park .... 21 1 Vogeltown 9 4 Totals ....... 467 200 Informal, 0. •
