BOROUGH COUNCIL ACTION. ! COTTAGES TO BE ERECTED. ! The question of erecting houses for municipal employees has recently been before the New Plymouth Council and at the last meeting a modified plan for a five-rootaed house costing £BOO was submitted, Last night it was decided that- the matter be referred to the Finance Com mitt.ee for favorable consideration of four cottages, the committee being given power to act, In Connection with housing a communication was received from a borough employee asking if the Council was prepared to advance him money to buy a house already built, and offered to pay £SO down. He stated that he might have to vacate his house at any time. In connection with the above, the engineer presented a report stating six other employees desired the Council to consider providing houses for them, Two were prepared to purchase, and the remainder desired to rent houses. It was decided to notify applicant that the Council has no legal a|thority to comply with the request, also to notify him of the steps the Council are taking in connection with housing, and that his application would be considered along with others. Applications previously received from employees will also be considered byj the Council when the matter of disposing of the cottages is under review.
