DAILY NEWS COMPETITIONS. ENTRIES CLOSE ON SATURDAY. Entries close on Saturday for the competitions in connection witli the Christmas Number of the Taranaki Daily News, which will be published on .Saturday, December 18. The results of the competitions will be announced iu the Christmas Number. The interest aroused is demonstrated by the large number of entries already received, and the number coming to hand this week indicates keen competition. From all parts of' Taranaki contributors have sent their entry. At the latest, entries should be posted to reach New Plymouth by Saturday night's mail, and should be addressed:' "Tile Editor, Christmas Number, Taranaki Daily News, New Plymouth." Here are the details of the competitions:— '

ESSAYS FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN. (1) Open to boys and girls up to 13 years of age.—Subject:, '-'The Most Interesting Day in My Life." First prize, £2 2s; second prize, £1 Is. (2) Open to boys and girls up to 16 years of age,—Subject: "My Happiest Christmaa Holiday." First prize £2 2s, second prize £1 Is. Competitors must give their age and state the school they are attending. A SHORT STORY. The Best Short Story of about 1000 words or less, open to any reader of the Daily News. First prize £3 3s. The editor reserves the right to use, for one issue only, any story submitted, the author to receive £1 Is. Our copyright for stories used will only exist for this issuo, but no story which has been published elsewhere will bo considered, HOW TO WIN A FROCK. Competition for the best design of a summer frock suitable for a girl of 9 to 12 years. Prize: An order on any dressmaker in Taranaki for a frock made in accordance with the winning design. In this competition it is not essential that sketches should be submitted, though this will be helpful to the judge. Competitors should, however, give very full details of how to make the frock, how much, and what material is employed, and how much it will cost at today's retail prices. The prize will be awarded for simplicity of style and economy in material and labor.

This competition is strictly limited to amateurs, and the editor reserves the right to reject any entry without stating his reason.
