THE SHIPPING SCANDAL. By Telegraph.—Press Assa.—Copyright. Received Dec. 1, 10 15 p.m. , Sydney, Dec. 1. Giving evidence at the shipping enquiry the marine surveyor Of Messrs. Burns, Philps and Co. stated tlur. the structure of two vessels which his company refused to take was lamentable. He did not think there were two such other wooden ships afloat. It would be impossible to make them seaworthy, as they had only half the timber in them that they should have had. UNEMPLOYED IN MELBOURNE. Received Dee. 1, 10.15 p.m. Melbourne, Dec. 1. Owing to slackness in trade there are 4000 unemployed in the Metropolitan area. Manv industries are at a standstill.
