The installation of the Mayor-elect took place at a meeting of the CoUneil at five o'clock yesterday afternoon, this formality being carried out to enable Mr. Wilson to eater on his duties immediately. Atter Mr. Wilson had signed the usual declaration, a welcome was extended to the new Mayor by Cr. P. J. Hill (Deputy-Mayor), who remarked that they were very glad to see Mr. Wilson back to the Council, and assured him of their support. In replying, Mr. Wilson said (that, as councillors knew, lie had assumed office because of his previous experience, and also on account of the fact that present members of the Council who were by right more entitled to the position had not been able to take office. The speaker said his experience in the Council was that councillors gave freely of their time to the affairs of the borough, anti although sometimes they held different views on a subject he had found that the Council had always worked together for the advancement of the borough. It was because of this know- 1 ledge that he had been willing to five an affirmative reply to the deputation which waited upon him. He hoped that during the short term of five motlths matters would progress ,to the satisfaction of the ratepayers and in the interests of the borough. This concluded the ceremony, it being considered that in view of ,the circumstances leading to the vacancy it was not desirable to have any other function.
