(From Our Own Correspondent) A number of Maoris answered the judgment juwmonses issued by Hoghaon and Sons at last Court day. The Maori* vera given a month to pay up, or the usual alternative —imprisonment. Last Saturday's furniture sale in the estate of the late M. J. Brennan w», a successful one. This estimate,is based on the increased-j>rice of butter-fat, but unless the big factories turn to making butter/in place - of cheese this estimate will not be realised.
A new firm of-drapers has opened up in th| town. There is no sign yet of the cement for the hydro-slectric works. A speaker at the Council meeting emphasised the need of the late County chairman showing more interest in nake, the county town. Your correspondent would like to see the Town Board —the town local mors ginger into pushing the interests of the eounty • town. With the excellent endowments for building workmen's homes thereon, good opportunity presents itself. Very few local authorities have got so good an asset. The town hall and the publio library could also be considerably improved as an advertisement to visitors. The overgrowth of gorse on road frontages is also an unattractive sight. The Town Board staff is /leaning up and improving the footpaths and generally giving the town the usual Christmas cleaning. ' At the S.M. Court costs, translation and solicitor's fee were allowed in each case. Joha McDavitt v. W." R, Thompson, £22, eourt costs £3 2s. The Egmonit County Council sued M. Horo for allowing a horse to wander, being fined 10s, with court costs £B. An affiliation order for 10s per week was granted in a Bahotu ease.
