ARCHITECT'S REPORT. The architect (Mr. C. H. Moore) reported as follows:—. Lower Mangorei School.—l visited this' school In connection with some necessary repairs. I would suggest, owing to the antiquated structure and the definite position now decided on for the new Upper Mangorei School tte question of securing a site ft the Junction receive consideration. I understand if a school was erected about 50 children could attend. Ngaere School.—As Instructed, I went into the matter of extra windows to let the sun into the infants' room. The general arrangement of this class room is rid'.eulous. There are two porches, one on each side of the school, and the boys of the upper standards rave to pass through the end cf the infants' room. I would respectfully recommend a verandah and separate entrances bo made, and the present entrance to the infants' room closed up (as per plan submitted). 1 would put this as a very urgent matter and ask the Board's sanction to ' carry it out during the holidays, the De- ! partment to be asked in the meantime to moke a grant to cover the cost. It should ' be further pointed out that the lighting of ' this class room is from tire back and the ' right-hand side, and in his alteration the ■ intention is to placo the children round to J get the proper lighting and thorough yen- ' tllation. i Tho ; matter of a site for the Lower Man- I gorei School was referred to the chairman and Mr. White for a report. The Board authorised the proposed altera- ' tions at Ngaero and application will be made : to the Department for a grant. : OKATO SCHOOL SITE. The Director of Education wrote asking whether the Board would consider the question of selling the four acres of, low-lying lind attached to the school site, with a view to the acquisition of the section the Board desired to obtain. It was considered that this land wtlle not suitable for school purposes should have some farm value. The matter had been referred to the Okato School Committee, from whom a reply had not yet been received. ALBERT ROAD REBUILDING. In view of the altered" circumstances, the Department notified that It could not see its way to entertain the proposal f or a grant for the rebuilding of thii school, and consideration was therefore 'deferred until the conditions altered. Mr. Smith said that the poor accommodation provided at the Albert Road school was one of the reasons why two of the settlers had left the district. It was resdlved to forward a copy of the tetter to the Albert P.oad Committee. REPRESENTATIVE ON WELLINGTON COLLEGE. A letter was received from the Wanganui Education Board notifying that the Board had, nonftaatled Mr. B. Mc|ntyre for reelection to the committee of advice of the Wellington Training College, and trusted ttat Ihe Board would seo Us way to support Mr. Mclntyre. [ During the course of discussion, it was I stated that under the present allocation of votes the appointment was practically made by the 'Wanganui Board. In this connection a letter was received from the Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister of Education, acknowledging receipt of the Board's resolution concerning the allotment of votes to the Boards that had to ele:t a representative on the Advisory Committee of the Wellington Training College, and stating tn reply, that It seemed only right that in view of the alterations in the proportions of Ore roll numbers of the electing Boards, a fresh allocation of votes should now be made. The matter would be' looked Into and the necessteps to adjust matters would bo taken In due course.
The letter from the Wanganui Board was received, the Board deferring action pending receipt of all the nominations.
PETITION FOR GLEN ROAD. Mrs. Gilbert, Glen Road, waited on the Board and asked that a school should bo established in the district. She stated that Ihe district lay midway between Kapuni and Manala, and that there waß a distance of nine and a hslf mules beween the two places. There were 43 children in the vicinity, some of whom wore being conveyed to the Manaia school by 'bus, but If all availnble were catered for it would mean at least Blxty children. Under the present arrangement with the 'bus, some of tie settlers had contributed £l, which they understood was the deficiency between the price paid tho contractor and the amount subsidised by' the Board. Since then they had been asked to contribute further amounts. Sre further stated that in the event of the school being granted, one of the settlers would make a free gift of an acre of land in a central position.
Mrs. Gilbert undertook to have the petition drawn up in proper form, when it will be considered by the Board at next meeting. Referring to the conveyance of children to school, the secretary of tho Manaia School pointed out ttat a few of the parents residing In the ICaupotonul district refused to make good the deficiency between the amount the Board allowed per child, and tho El per journey which the contractors had charged, and had, he understood!, decided to apply for a school in their district. The Manaia Committee had considered tte (matter and suggested that the Board should subsidise half tho amount required to purchase a 'bus to convey the children from the Kauimkonul district to the Manaia School, and take over the cost of running, which, it was estimated, would show a saving on the amount at present paid to tie contractor, and would also be far less than building a school in the district where there was a Boating populat._
