STRATFORD.

TARANAKI DAILY NCWS. . AGENCY. Adpertiseraents and items of news for rmbllcation should be left at the office of t,, local representative, W. J. Wilsou, noit Union Bank. Nov. 27. Although the weather has been perfect to-day, the town was much quieter than is usually the case on a Saturday. This state of affairs was doubtless due to the fact that many of the country people who came in for the show on Wednesday and Thursday were unable to spare another day away from their farms. A welcome home social was tendered to Private H. H. Rogers in the Pembroke Road school last evening by the local patriotic committee, a large number of residents being present. Mr. R. A. Belcher, on behalf of the committee, presented Private Rogers with a beautiful illuminated adtfress, and istatet! that though Private Rogers had returned to his home, they were sorry to say lie was so severely disabled that he was still far from being well. Mr. Belcher expressed the hope that Private Rogers would soon be restored to his former self again., i Private Rogers feelingly replied. The rest of the programme consisted of singing and dancing, items being contributed by Misses Black and 0. Martin. The dance music was supplied by Mrs. Bianchi, and the duties of M.C. were capably undertaken by Mr. N. F. Newbold. Supper was provided by the ladies of the district.

Mr. W. J. Crawshaw, manager of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand, will retire from the bank's service on November 30th, and after spending a three months' holiday in the Dominion he intends going to England to take up his residence. During the war period, Mr. Crawshaw rendered splendid service as treasurer to the Stratford Patriotic Committee. >

The practice adopted by drivers of the Stratford County Council motor lorries taking up the dead centre of the road and forcing all other traffic to the sides, is proving a source of annoyance and danger to many drivers of horse vehicles. Mr. G. Snowsill complained today that the driver of an empty motor lorry belonging to the Stratford County Council which was going towards Midhirst, refused to shift from the crown of the road at a place where it was very narrow, thus forcing him and his gig over the bank as he passed. Fortunately the only damage done was a bruised shoulder by the horse. He added that the motor lorry did not even stop but kept straight on at a fairly fast pace, and the same thing happened to another vehicle further along the road. "I think," said Mr. Snowsill, "the County Council should instruct its motor drivers to be a little more considerate to drivers of horse vehicles, and to allow at least half of the road when the lorry is empty and going down hill as it was in this case, because if a serious accident happened, the County Council would probably have to pay damages. Quite a number of people have complained to me about the same thing, and it is time the Council's attention was drawn to the matter."

Photographs taken now can be finished in good time for posting before Christmas. Can yon think of anything so personal, so appropriate as a photograph for a cherished gift? Let McAllister do it and it will please both giver and recipient. Studio. Broadway, Sr-ratford.

Hopkins' big book sale is still attracting a great deal of attention in Stratford, owing to tlie extraordinary reductions which have been made. The sale is a genuine attempt to reduce stocks to make room for new Xmas goods, ami even the latest editions are being sacrificed. Call and see the wonderful value olferiiig. .
