FIRE IN COAL MINE.
FIERCE FLAMES 50 FEET HIGH. MAY BURN FOR MONTHS. By Tslefraph.—Press JWaoolltioa. Dunedin, Last Night. On Friday morning that part of tin Tarata coal mine known as ; Barclay'! was found to be on fire, and was blazing fiercely, the names rising- to a height of forty to 'fifty feet, with flense volumes of smoke rolling skywards. The scene of the fire is an outcrop seam about 25 feet in thickness, easily worked, from which abouj ft hundred tons of coal a day w&9 obtained. This quantity is approximately half the daily output from the Tarata mine, and its, loss k a serious one to tTfe company, and also to the miners working the seam, who arc easily able to earn £3
a day. The. is still burning fiercely, ftnid the prospect* of getting it out are very remote. It cannot be overcome for many months at all events, whilst experienced ) miners claim that it cannot lie got under control now or ever without flooding. As there is no water supply hope in that direction is remote.
