At the statutory meeting of the Kg. Mont County Council on Wednesday, Mr. S. Campbell was elected chairman.

Mr. Harry Nixon, a well-known New Zealand journalist, is spending a fendays in New Plymouth.

A London cable says Lord .Milner (Secretary for the Colonies) has appointed Mr. Alwin Dickinson as British Commissioner at Nauru. He was formerly a director of the Pacific Phosphate Company.

Lieutenant George Buckley, conductor of the Queen Alexandra Band, Wanganui, has been chosen as adjudicator for the North Island Band Contest, to be held at Dannevirke on February 15th and l»th.

The Secretary of State for the Colonies has advised the Department of Internal Affairs that His Majesty the King has been pleased to approve of the retention of the title of "Honourable" by Sir .Tamea Allen, K.CB.. who has served continuously for a period of more than three years as a member of the Executive Council of New Zealand. The death has occurred in Christchurch of Mr. Cyril J. Mountfort, a wellknown Christchurch architect. Mr. Mountfort was sixty-eight years old. He had been in failing health for some time, and on Friday last he suffered a paralytic seizure.

Bishop Julius, of Christchurch, is now on his way back to New Zealand after his visit to England and the Continent. At Sydney he is due to preach on behalf of .the Board of Missions, and he hopes to arrive in Christrhurch in December.

Mr. F. 0. Tattle, late manager at Napier for the Standard Insurance Company of New Zealand, Ltd., has been appointed manager of the Melbourne branch of the company, in succession to Mr. E. T. Could. Mr. W. Ramsay, for many years chief clerk, has been appointed assistant manager.

Mr. James Morton, of Auckland, has been appointed inspector of the South British Insurance Company. Mr. Morton returned last week from India, where during the last two years lie has been acting-manager of the company's Bombay and Calcutta branches. Mr. F. A. Bates, M.A., has accepted an appointment as principal of the Marton High School. The Palmerston North High School Board on Tuesday congratulated Mr. Bates upon his appointment and regretted his departure. After a long illness Dr. Owen passed away at Wellington on Friday last. Deceased was for about twe(lve years in practice in Raetihi, where he was very popular.

Mr. B. Blackball is living for Auckland this week to meet liis parents. Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Blackball, formerly of Lepperton, who have been on a tour of the United States- and the British Isles (luring the last eighteen months, and are returning to the Dominion by the Niagara, which is due at Auckland this week. Miss Blackball, who left with her parents, is returning via the Sue/., and is expected 1o arrive in New Zealand at about the end of December.

Last month the Karl of Liverpool was received in audience by the King at Buckingham Palace, upon relinquishing his appointment as Ciovernor-General and Commander-in-Chief of the Dominion of New Zealand, when the King invested him with the Insignia of the Knight Grand Cross of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath (Civil Division). Lord and Lady Liverpool subsequently had the honor of being invited to luncheon with the King and Queen.
