THE SIX MILLION' LOAN.

IMPROVEMENT IN SUPPORT. I UNNAMED PAPERS ATTACKED. By Tdeiraph—Press Assodatlof Wellington. Last Night. ''l have received the latest returns in regard to the £0,(100,000 loan this morning," the Prime Minister to-day informed the Chambers of Commerce deputation, "and they are very much better than 1 expected." Mr. Mafisey added that he had become rather discouraged during the last few days from the accounts that had come in, and the remarks of some of the newspapers, which had taken up an attitude which was the reverse of patrioti". Tl>eso wore not Wellington papers, and he would have more to say upon the subject later, but if ever an - attempt had been made to kill or prevent a loan from being successful it had been made by one or two papers. A member of the deputation: "It ia very unfair." Massey: "Grossly unfair and unpatriotic." The Hon. E. P, Lee: "It is a soldiers' loan tao." Mr. Massey: "Yes." It was. he added, practically the last of the loans for this purpose, and the money the country must have in order to" keep faith with the soldiers. It was going to keep faith with them, and no hardship would be done to anyone who was contributing to the loan. I COMPULSION UNLIKELY. Position quite satisfactory. Wellington, Last Night. Referring this evening to the new loan, Mr. Massey stated that he regarded the position as quite satisfactory. Some more money had still to come in, and he could noi say yet whether or not the compulsory provisions of the Act would have to be applied. The Government, in any case, was going to keep faith with returned soldiers and the country by raising the money required to complete the settlement scheme.
