i HELPS DROWNING COMRADE. THE OAMARU FATALITY, By Teltcripn.—Preis Auoclatlou. Oamaru, Last Night. An inquest on the body of John Shepbird, who lost his life in the boating accident in the harbor yesterday afternoon, was held to-day. The Jury found that deceased was ac•'dentally drowned by the swatrmin;' of a rowing boat. The jury highly commended the plucky efforts of a nine-teen-year-old youth named Walter Giib, who was acting as coxswain of the boat, and who, at the risk of his life, made desperate endeavours to rescue Shepherd. who clung to Gibb and both aank three time*. Gibb, however, retained Ilia p're«race of mind and supported Shepherd for ten minfites until a rescue boat arrived from the shore. Gibb was exhausted on being helped out of the water, but Shepherd was beyond human •id.
