BOATING FATALITY.
A YOUNG MAN DROWNED. ACCIDENT AT OAMARU. By TeletfMpli.—Prese AumliUoo. Oamaru, Last Night. . A distressing boating fatality occun red in the harbor this afternoon, in which a young man named John Shepherd, twenty-air years old, fourth son • of Mr. S. T. Shepherd, of Tyne Oamaru, lost his life. It appears that one of the Oamaru boating club four oar crews, of Which Shepherd was stroke, was out training.:' in the harbor, and in rounding the bud the boat was swamped. The crew left the boat, but seeing Shepherd in dii- '« tress his mates kept him afloat until ; help arrived from the shore. Shea- ■ herd was visibly distressed, and had collapsed before rescue, and although every effort was made to resuscitate him, he expired about an hour and *l half later, SRepherd Went overseas with the 18th Reinforcements, and saw threa , ywi* service, and was severely wounded. It is thought that a gas attack he stateed had undermined his powers of rt« sietance, and that he died from tfca shock of being thrown into the wa|t«r.
