According to the Star to-night, searches for literature banned under the War Regulations Act have been eonducted by the Christchurch police, within the past few days. As a result of inquiries made among booksellers and different associations copies of the book "Red Europe" have been impounded, and certain information has been sent to' Wellington for consideration by the Department of Justice. ', Mr. .lnstice Balmond: at the Supreme Court to-day, delivered his reserved judgment in the Wellington case Aitken and others v. Smedley, an appeal against the refusal of a Magistrate to eject a tenant. His.Honour said the first question was whether there was a right ol appeal from the Magistrate's Court on ejectment proceedings, and this had never been the subject of a considered and authoritative determination, "I am of opinion that there is no appeal from an ejectment order, and if there is any appeal at all in ejectment cases it is limited to an appeal by the tenant against an order of ejectment; GOVERNMENT TIMBER PURCHASE. Wellington, Nov. 25. During the session a departmental committee of inquiry was set up to examine the purchase of bush country in the North Island, by the Railwav Department. A scandal was alleged! but the report disposes of the allegations and declares the transaction to have been a sound business purchase. Tt was properly conducted and the department was getting good value for its money. Tha land was intended to provide the timber required by the department.
