HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEMES.
TENDERS TO BE CALLED (By Wire.—Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Last Night. The Minister for Public Works, answering a question put by Mr. E. Newman (M.P. for Manawat'u) during the session, stated that arrangements had been made for inviting tenders from engineering firms for the completion of hydro-electric schemes. Plans and specifications are now being prepared, and when tenders are called sufficient time will be allowed to enable not only New Zealand firms, but also firms abroad, to investigate and tender. Mr. 'Newman had suggested that the development of hydro-electric power could be accelerated by entrusting one or more of the schemes approved by the Department to private firms.
