In the bantams, Haddocks (N.Z.I 8 o'/,, defeated Mapleston (Queensland) 7.13 m tlici fourth round, when the referee stopped ihe fight. Maddoeks was the cieverer and faster flehter, but Mapleston was plucky, though groggy when the flgtt was stopped. Maddocka wou easily. In the lightweights, Desmond (N.Z.) 9.0'/,, knocked out Kane (Victoria), 9.6, in ti'e third round. The winner was much the cleverer. Both were tired when Desmond crossed his' right to the jaw. In the welters, Hungerword (Queensland) defeated Lawless (N.Z.) 10. on points. The judges disagreed, and the referee gave the verdict to Hungerford. It was a close tight. Lawless won Hie first two rounds. His attacks were always the cleverer, but gameness won the fight for Hungerford. In the leavles, McLeary (N.Z.) 11.9 knocked out. Hobbs (Queensland) 12.10%. in the second round. Hobbs was clown In' the first round and twice in the second, STRATFORD CONTESTS TO-NIGHT. To-night's professional fight at the Town Hall, Stratford, between llutherford (Australia), and Withey (New Zealand) for a purse of £ liiO, promises to be the Best exhibition of fighting ever seen in Taranaki. The two contestants are now in Stratford and are actively preparing for the contest. Both are in the pink of condition and feel confident of victory. As they are both in' tho twenties, and have splendid fighting records, tile fight should be particularly Interesting. The amateur programme lias been carefully arranged, ;and interesting contests inlay be looked forward to. Tho amateur bouts will consist of four tvvoniinute rounds and professional contest of fifteen three-minute' rounds. The Indications are that the attendance will be very large, the bookings having been particularly good. Details of tie amateur contests are advertised in tills issue.
