INTEREST IN THE COMPETITIONS, ENTRIES CLOSE NEXT WEEK. The prizes offered in the competitions in connection with the Christmas Number of the Daily News are such as should command the interest of all school children and adults, for the chief prize is £3 3s and the lowest reward is £1 Is. School pupils | should remember that while there are two .special essay competitions for them, they are also eligible for the short story competition, and if they do not win the firßt prize of £3 3s they may receive £1 Is for the publication of their story. A good deal of interest has been aroused throughout Taranaki in these competitions, and especial interest is being shown by women in the scheme by which they can secure a child's frocK for nothing. In reply to a correspondent's enquiries, it should be made clear that to send a pattern for the frock competition will enhance a competitor's contribution, but what is primarily aimed at is thai someone should suggest £ dresa which will at once be a boon to all Taranaki mothers, and that is why a lucid description of how to make th«r dress is necessary. Here are the details of the competi' tions:— , ESSAYS FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN. '' (1) Open to boys and girls up to IS year* of age.—Subject: "The Most Interesting Day in My Life." First prize, £2 2s; second prize, £1 Is. (2) Open to boys and girls up to 16 years of age.—Subject: "My Happiest Christmas Holiday." First prize £i 2s, second prize £1 is. Competitors must give their age and state the schciol they are attending A SHORT STORY. The Best Short Story of about 1000 words or legs, open to any reader of the Daily News. First prize £3 '3s. The editor reserves the right to use, for one issue only, any story submitted, the author to receive £1 *ls. Our copyright for stories used will only exist for this issue, but no story which has been published elsewhere will be considered. HOW TO WIN A FROCK. Competition for the best design of a summer frock suitable for a girl of 9 to 12 years. Prize: An order on any dressmaker in Taranaki for a frock made in accordance with the winning design. In this competition it is not essential that sketches should be submitted, though this will be helpful to the judge. Competitors should, however, give very full details of how to make the frock, how much and what material is employed, and how much it will cost at today's retail prices. The prize will be awarded for simplicity of Style and economy in material and labor. This competition is strictly limited to amateurs, and the editor reserves the right to reject any entry without "stating his reason. CONDITIONS. All competitions definitely close on Saturday night, December 4. Competitors, in each case, should address their contributions: "The Editor. Christmas Number, Taranaki Daily News, New Plymouth." If it is desired to have unsuccessful matter returned a stamped addressed envelope should be enclosed. In order that names may not be allowed to influence the judges, competitors should" attach their name and full address to their contribution on a separate sheet, so that it can lie removed, and a code substituted, before ti'c contribution is submitted to Up i"dxe.
