i PRISON FOR BURGLARS. By Telcctapli.—l'resi Association. Invercargill, Last Night. At the Supreme Court, John Sage and George jSage, brothers, were charged with breaking and entering and theft. The former pleaded guilty, and George Sage not guilty. After a lengthy hearing the jury found George Sage guilty, and each of the prisoners was sentenced to two years' imprisonment. NOT GUILTY ON RE-TRIAL. Auckland, Last Night. In a ease in which Thomas Richard Quinn and Jas. Albert North were tried at the Supreme Court yesterday, on a charge of stealing £4, and for failing to make the necessary bookkeeping entries, while they were employed a 8 totalisator clerks at Avondale races on October 3, the jury failed to reach an agreement and a new trial was ordered to begin this morning. On this occasion the jury, after an hour's retirement, brought in a verdict of not guilty, and tlie accused were discharged. GIVEN A CHANCE. Blenheim, Last Night. Reginald William •Fisher, who pleaded guilty in the lower Court to converting to his own use £94 13s 2d, received on behalf of the Awatere County Council, lie being employed by the council as clerk and engineer, came up for sentence before Mr. Justice Hosking in the Supreme Court. 1-Ie was admitted to probation for two years, on condition that a prohibition order was taken out and that he pay the expenses of the prosecution. NAPIER SESSIONS. Napier, Nov. 2.1. Tlie Supreme Court opened to-day, Mr. Justice Sahnond presiding. The following prisoners were sentenced: John William Jooster theft, 12 months' bard labor; Benjamin Meikle and John and Donald Fletcher, for theft, two years probation, and each £25 restitution. A true bill was found in the case of Thomas Maine, a charge of indecent assault. The Grand Jury recluc.'d the charge of the murder of her illegitimate infant against Phoebe Cattinaeb, to one of manslaughter and concealment of birth. MURDER CHARGE REDUCED. Napier, Last Night. In the Supreme Court to-day, before Sir John Salmond, the charge' of child murder against Phoebe Cattanach \va«s reduced by the Grand Jury to one of manslaughter. The Common Jury returned a verdict of not guilty.' The same accused pleaded guiltv to a charge of concealing the birth of an illegitimate child. Sentence was deferred. John Wooster, who pleaded guilty in the lower Court to the theft of hjg'gage from a railway platform, was sentenced to one year's hard labir. Benjamin Meiklejohn and Donald Fletcher, charged in connection with the same theft, were admitted to probation for two years.
