Mr C. Harton, late of Nelson, has taken up duty in tl» money order department of the New Plymouth Post Office. Cabinet yesterday agreed ta the appointment to the magistracy of Mr. J. H. Salmon, for many years registrar of the Arbitration Court. Mr, P'. J. H. White, chairman of the Taranaki Education Board, was a passenger for Wellington by tlie mail ifsin yesterday. The Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee mot yesterday, the Governor-General presiding. Two scholarships were awarded as follows: For 1020, N. T L. Airey (Auckland); Tor 1921, H. .T. Ryburn (Otago). Both siucessfu'l candidates are returned soldiers. Mr. Snodgrass, Mayor of Nelson, accompanied by Mr. Littlejohn, city engineer, are on a visit to Taranaki. They arrived in Eltham by the mid-day train and were shown over the road by Mr. C. J. Belcher, chairman of the Eltham County Council during the afternoon. They came on to New Plymouth in the evening. A Press tolcglram from Wellington says the Presbyterian General Assembly appointed the Rev. R. M. Ryburn, of .St. Andrew's Church, Christchurch, to the newly-created position of director of youth work. Mr. Ryluirn has yet to consult his congregation before* definitely accepting the position. Writing to friends in Opunake, Rev. Papakakura, tfho is in charge of a party of Maori entertainers who are touring the United States under engagement to Chautauqua, speaks in glowing terras. of their varied experiences and for their reception throughout the tour. They are looking forward to returning to the Dominion in February after fulfilling an IS months' contract, and have received an offer to conclude a further contract evtendign over a period of three years. —Star. The death occurred on the 18th inst. 'of one of Wanganui's oldest settlers, Mr. Frederick Carvell, at the ripe age of 80 years. Mr. Carvell, who was a native of Northampton, England, was one of the Dominion's early colonists, having come out in the ship Emma Colvin 00 years ago. His wife predeceased him in 1891, and he is survived by an adult family of six sons and four daughters, who will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement. —Chronicle. The death occurred on Saturday evening of Mr. W. T. Coombridge at the hbspital in Hamilton. Mr. Coombridge had been a farmer in different parts of South Taranaki before going North some months since—first near Opunake and later near Hawera. He was known as a. good farmer, and a man of sterling worth, and was one of the original directors of the Farmers' Co-op., which institution he supported loyally in the early days of its existence "(says the Star). His widow, with , the family of two sons and three daughters, and his brother, who lives in Hawera, will have the deep sympathy ' of many friends in their great loss. Information has been received in New Zealand of the death in England of Mr. V:'ctor Marsden, of the Morning Post, London, who represented his paper during the recent tour of the Prince of wales. His .death was the result of impaired health, the outcome of Mr. Marsden's imprisonment in Russia. It was thought the trip with the Prince of Wales would have restored his health, but he suddenly collapsed. The deceased was for a time imprisoned in the fortress of Peter and Paul, at Petrograd. During the Prince's tour of New Zealand, Mr. Marsden remained most of the time on the warship, his' poor health preventing him from taking V-i't in the festivities. i
