I'ogwell (holder) and I*. Hauuan (challenger). There was a three knot current and a strong head wind against the rowers. Hannan won the toss, and chose the inside position. Fruin -ft splendid start Hannan drew away immediately, and soon obtained a two lengths' lead. This order obtained till the first beiid was reacted, when rough water was met with. Both rowed a good swinging stroke, but Haiman still kept ihe advantage. Nearlng the Wairau shed, Hannan struck a snag, and momentarily lost ground. Coming to the half-way point, the wind and current drove the boats to the southern side. Hannan was here four or Ave lengths ahead. Getting too close In Fogwell fouled the hank, which checked his progress. Hecovering lie started after Hannan, reducing the gap to about a couple of lengths. Both uieu had quickened their stroke, Hannan responding to every challenge. " Caming into smooth water Fogwell started to move up, rowing a ciuicker stroke. The Australian made a great effort, hut Hainan kept his advantage, winning by a length andj a halt. Time, 21.3.
