Exceptionally large acceptances are carded for he opening day (to-day) of the Takapuna Jockey Club spring meeting. The Alison liardiciip, one mile iwo and a half furlongs, will see Uncle Ned running over a favorite dlstace, and with Woody Clet, and I .Lord Kenilwnrlli engaged an interes.iuf nee is certain. The Cheltenham Hnnd'cap, h\x furlongs, has attr.'cted a big field, lncliici'ng recent winners like Landslide, Lucullan, and [/.r 111, Munu* wean u bold K*umr •»(« j

at a difference of a stve in the (.'.imhrai Jl.'iud'eap, four furlongs, but Oranga may upset the top-wights with the handy impost of 0.10. The hurdlers engaged are not a j brilliant lot. In Hie open class, Cymer and Scottish Knight should prove Attest, while amongst the hacks Otara appears to stand "■ut prominently. In the minov events Princo Charleroi and Tinohoro read as well as anything. THE HOROWHENUA MEETING. Despite threatening weather in the morning a large crowd of equine worshippers pilgrimaged to Levin on Wednesday, cars bringing sports from Wanganul, Marton, Foxton, Palmerston, and places between there and Wellington. A high wind raged, and to make matters worse rain fell at frequent intervals. However, a good days sport, with a quartette of odds-on winners kept the crowd in good humor, and secrctaiy W. Bull and his assistants kept everything going splendidly. The totalisator polled well, registering £22,399, as against £14,860 last year. Diamond Nap (A. McDonald) was a strong order in the Hurdles, but solid backing came for O'Rane (W. Bowden), and the veteran Hnshman (A. Ward). The "hard heads" reckoned Hushman a. sweet bet. Angus Keith sent the dozen runners away in good style, and the race was full of incident. Better Luck and Hushman led the hunch over the first fence, and in a scramble Diamond Nap lost his rider. Dumper and Trenthaun Rose then took (he lead, but Pawerewere passed them half a mile from home and led O'Rane and Hushman Into the straight. Hushman was coming up In great style, but ran down the last fence, and O'Rane was left to wear down and beat Pawerewere by a neck. Punters were hot on the scent in the Hack Welter. Admiration (Wallace Young) and Passenger (L. Morris), the only ones Backed in earnest, easily heating their opponents and finishing in the order of favoritism. Estonia's half-brother certainly deserved his win, as he has been running seconds and thirds for some time. Even betting characterised the Maiden Scurry, Sandy McDonald eventually finishing up a trifle better backed than Lady Polly and Gallia. The last-named, a six-year-old daughter of Gold Crest, led all the way, and just lasted long enough to beat Top Dog, who had all the worst of the luck. Malatane (R. Hunt) and Moutoa Ivanova (A. McFlynn) were considered best in the Cup. Ladlfy's gear collapsed prior to the start, and after nearly annihilating a. wouldb» rescuer, she galloped four rounds and was withdrawn. Matty and Matatane were in front for six furlongs, and were then passed by Moutoa Ivanova, who looked a likely winner. Matty and>Bose Pink came faßt nearing the home turn, but the trio ran out wide, allowing the lltlc-fancled Eaperance to slip through on the fence and win narrowly from the unlucky Rose Pink, with Moutoa Ivanova and Matty close up. Automoana (R. Reed) had a slight call over Flight Commander (L. Morris) and American Beauty (A. McFlynn) In the betting on the Levin Hack Handicap, and the trio filled the places. American Beauty and Flight Commander were the first to begin, while Automoana dwelt at thy post. F'igh Commander shook off American' Beauty ii. the Inst bit, and Automoana, who finished strongly, was a fair third. With Waimatoa an absentee, the McDonald Memorial Handicap was voted a moral for Nursing Sister (A. Reed). Gold Problem, as usual, began quickly, but at. the end of a couple of furlongs Beloved drew up. Gold Problem had Beloved beaten at the halfdistance, but. failed to stall off Nursling Sis(er's finishing run. Punters now felt they had the breeze bell nd them, and nothing but Prlntcmps (L. Morris) would do in the Wereroa Welter. The favorite was always In a winning position, but nearly went un<jer to Matty, who finished up well. Rlslnghara was a close I third, and is on the up-grade. I SHU another hot favorite strolled home |in the Hokio Hack Handicap. Yankee Dan | (A. Reed) was voted a moral, and aided hy i a flying start, just managed to land the stake from Samarang and American Beauty. A feature of the meeting was the vindlca-, tion of the "horses for courses" argument. Pawerewere ran second in the Hurdles last year, and repeated the feat on Wednesday, while Gold Problem registered a similar feat in the McDonald Memorial Handicap, a race ho won two years ago. Printemps won a race there last year, and Samarang, Yankee Dan and American Beauty again proved that they ran their best rccs on the. Levin irack. An Interlude In the hunt for winners at Levin was a man hunt, the person chased being an alleged pick-pocket. He put up a great fight, but after a run of about a anile and a half, 'was cornered and captured. TURF TOPICS. Good fields are promised for the Ashhurst meeting on Wednesday. Winners at Levin will put up lOlbs extra, which should even up matters sufficiently. Amongst the hurdlers engaged Mattock and Diamond Nap may be best backed. Silver Link has a big impost In the Pohanglna Handicap, and Rouen may prove more seasoned. The .Flying Hack Handicap will bring tdgother smart sprinters like Hymarty, Borealls and Pnror.ingi, and In the Komako Hack Handicap Amber Tips and Martian Miss will engage a lot of attention. Rose Pink, who was unlucky at Levin, may make amends in (he Ashlmrsl Cup, though Esperance will csrry her penalty wo". The Maiden Stakes li run over five furlongs—not eigflt furlongs, as published In exchanges—and the distance should suit Melting Moment and Minsk. If Matauia Is reserved for the Raumai Welter lie should go well, and In his absence Vasilkof will Mirry big money. Admiration won so easily, at Levin that a penalty may not stop him in the Manawntu Gorge Handicap, though Amber Tips and Passenger may keep him very Inlay.
