BOXING.
HIGH SCHOOL CONTESTS, 4 SPLENDID EXHIBITION. The New Plymouth Boys' High School annual boxing championship contests look place last night In the Assembly Hall, when good, clean matches were witnessed. The general knowledge of the art displayed by' competitors was pleasing to note, and creditable to their instructor (Mr. Eggleton. of the school staff). The progress of many of the boys since last contests was remarked on. Mr. T. Smith officiated as referee. Among the visitors were Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., and Mr. E. Jackson (president of tlio Taranaki Boxing Association). Tho bouts, which; were of three rounds each, resulted UNDER 6st. The bouts between the midgets were the source of much pleasure to the onlookers. Winfleld (5.12) met Fookes (5.3), and after an extra one minute round, the verdict went to Fookes. Hawken (5.7) beat Easton (5.7). In the final between Hawken and Fookes both lads hit out, Fookes winning. UNDER 7at. (FINAL). Mason (6.11) v. Fletcher (Q.O), —This was a great bout, both lads going hammer and tongs, and though not very able exponents of science they made up for it in willingness. After an extra ona minute round Fletcher got the verdict, and It was a popular win. UNDER Bst. F. Davis (7.8) v. J. Jackson (7.7).—Th0 former was one of the best boxers seen out during the eveuing. having developed a good style. Jackson got most of the punishment and retired after the second round. T Penn (7.12) v. K. Robinson (7.l2).—The fire; two rounds were quiet. Penn, who showed activity In the third round, got the verdict. In the final Penn proved a more solid oponent for Davis, who, however, won by a fair margin, after doing (most of tte fighting. UNDER 9st. Airey (9.0) v. L. Rawson (8.13).—X fast contest. The second was a punishing round for both. After the third tho decison was in favor of Alrey. Hughson (8.9) v. Burdett (B.9}.—After a quiet bout, Hughson was adjudged the winner. In the semi-finals, Scanlon (8.11), who had a bye, met Ajrey, the pair being well matched. In a go<xl <£ go" Scanlon showed up in the earlier stages. Airey forced in tho last round, but did not overhaul his opponent's lead. Hughson and Scanlon fought out the final In good style. There were plenty of exchanges, but towards the conclusion Hughson was landing most blows (Scanlon being plainly exhausted), and he got the honors. UNDER lOst. R. Hair (9.11) v. E. Smart (9.lo).—Smart's nggressivVnesr, was met by a good def°nrc from Hair, a right-handed fighter. The former kept up tho pace In the next round, but in the third his blows were missing, .u d Hair got. home niorc frequently. Smart goc the verdict. Pease (113) v. Richard (9.8). —Ric.lurd had Pease on the ropes on a number of occasions and was doing tho leading. \ (a.r defence was put up by Pe;:se. In the final, Smart and Rickard fought a vigorous bout. Rickard had a good style, but Smart, a solid fighter, won. UNDEP list. IC O'Halloran (10.11 v. M. Airey (.10,7). I*i rounds one and two Airey was ; oing th? leading, his opponent defending nicely. In rhc third Airey had the advatagc, and the decision went in hj!» lavor. Foden (10.7) v. Drader (10.4).—A11 uneventful bout till '.he third ruiind, when Foden livened up but Drader was quite equal to the occasion. Drader met Alrey In ti.e final in this class. Airey was making the fighting in the first round. 111 the next Drader; a two-handed boxer, landed frequently on. his opponent's face. Matters were fairly even in the third, and after an extra one-minute round AiTey was adjudged the winner. . During tfie evening the various cimtesunts were seconded by Prefects Osborne and L. O'Halloran. \ THE STRATFORD TOURNAMENT. Keen Interest Is being taken throughout the province in the boxing tournament 10 be held by the Stratford Sports and Pastimes Club on November 24th (Show night), and already a large number of seats have been booked. The meeting of the two professionals,, Rutherford and Withcy—both of whom have splendid records, will he an event in Taranaki boxing circles, and in addiiim 1.0 this splendid attraction a particularly good series of amateur bouts is being put on. The box plan is still open at Grubb's trusic shop. A WANGANUI MATCH. By Telegrapn.-Press Association, i Wanganui, Last. Night. The authprities of the local Boeing Association, who had arranged for Gum and Cann to fight for the bantam weight championship of New Zealand on Nov. 24, have received word from Gunn that he cannot get down to Bst Gibs on Ihe da'.e mentioned, and the match has therefore been postponed till December.
