NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Wire.—Special to Xews.) Chrlstchurch, Lr.st Night. General Petain was a strong favorite for the Spring Hiirdlc Handicap, and lie looked a sure winner when he drew away from Lord Nagar half-n-mile from home. On reaching the stJright, however, he was caught by Gamecock who won easily, while -Tack Symon< got up to take second >money from General retain, who lost some ground by blundpring at the last hurdle.

Isabel and Cashmere had mosit friends for the Spring Plate, and they had the. finish to themselves, Cashmere drawing our in the last bit to win by two lengths, while Insurrection was two lengths further back, a neck in front of Pioyal Mao and Askari. Afier an inquiry, the stewards decided that Cash- ' mere had interfered with Isabel in the 1 straight, and stopped her chance of winning. They therefore reversed the positions, placing Isabel first and Cashmere second. Tim incident cause a lot of discussion, but the decision seemed to the writer quite tVe TigV r.ne. There appeared to ho no suggestion that the interference was deliberate, as pro f of which Cashmere's jockey, H. Gray, was not mentioned in the official finding. Sixteen hacks took part, in the Linwood Handicap. Truthful was a strong favorite, kit after locking a winner a hundred yards from home, she collapsed and had 10 be content with third place, half a length behind Police Hal, who, in turn. succumbed to ;i brilliant finishing run by Barleycorn. The winenr is a five-year-old brother to .Inhii Barleycorn. A good performer over all distances, he crimes from a breed that improves witlu age, Battle Scene and Ben Bolt were just behind the placed trio, and both should be worth watching. The \ew Zealand Cup was one of the most interesting races over ihe distance that the v.rlter can recall. Tenterfield led into th* straight and then retired, leaving P.engerocp In charge, but hefore the distance was reached Imaribbcn had cut him down. She looked a winner there, but Oratress, hard-ridden, gradually overhauled the Blenheim-owned mare and wou by a length, v:Vilc Bou?evc«-p two lengths away, jus", lasted long enough to stall off Bonnie Maid.-after whom came RoyV Star, Vagabond, and (Hon Canny. The winner's performance was full of merit, ;,s she came on at the right end Admiration eipressed with the showing of Imaribhon, whe has only been in work a little more than two months. Warlike ran a good r*:ce for over a jnile and a half and then dropped out Tenterfield collapsed in the most surprising fashion, and was one of the iast to finish. IThe Welcome Stakes simply confirmed an opinion previously held, that Mermin was a brilliant two-year-old. " Ile got a b'M of I a bump from The Hawk soon after the | start, but he did n<>t lose much ground, and he had the race won a long way from honv. The Hawk, who finished second, is a well , grown gelding by Martian, who also sired I the third horse Meteorite, i Per fhe Apprentices' Handicap, baety-rs I went for Malaga, and he wou comfortably from Algidus, and Foo Chow, iho | rest of the field being a long way back. , Malaga is a promising three-vear-old who 1 locks like staying. Arrowsmith was favorite for the Stewards' * Handicap, and finishing in great style under 5 bis big load, he gradually wore Chimera

down In ilie last fifty yards wl He Maioha finished very fast in third place. Arrowsmith's performance was a brilliant one. Radial was close up fourth, and he may be worth following, while Rude also ran well. Miss (iold, Solt'auello, and Blackmail were stopping at the end, after shbwing plenty of pace. Miss Mimic ran well after being a trifle unlucky at the start. Silver Peak, the second favorite, put up a fair performance, but Surveyor, another heavily backed candidate, was never dangerous.

There were nine starters for the Riccarton Welter Handicap, which prodded a great linish between six horses. Dainty Step just got up in the Ui.t stride to beat Bomnelter, with KilCee. Walton, Demand, and Starland in a bunch. The writer thought Demand was third. His colors and those of Kilkee are somewhat similar. Bonnetter might have won but for getting a very bad start.
