THE TRAIN SERVICE.
VIEWS OF HAWERA RETAILERS EARLY MAIL "TRAINS WANTED At the annual meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce on Friday, a letter was received from the Hawera Retailers' Association stating that it was of the opinion that the mail traia from New Plymouth should arrive at Hawera not later than at present. The president explained what had been done in connection with the speeding up of the mail trains. A deputation was ttt meet Mr. MeVilley, but he had not arrived in Taranaki, and may not be here till February. When the New Plymouth delegates placed their proposal before them it looked very attractive, but if the idea was to connect' with the ferry service this could be done by leaving New Plymouth earlier. He was quite with the Retailers' Association, and the matter would be reconsidered.
Mr. K. Mills pointed out that the reference to the ferry service scarcely covered the proposition put before them., Th iilen was to speed up the train so that it would arrive in Wellington earlier. It, had been suggested, he regretted (o say, that the Taranaki Chamber was milking its proposals in the interests of New Plymouth. Ho did not think there was any reason to suggest that sort of thing. He believed the idea was to bring about an improvement as far as Taranaki generally was concerned. Mr. Harrop said the Retailers' Association was quite in favor of speeding up, but they wanted the train to leave earlier. Ten-thirty was too Jate to arrive in Hawera. Mr. Gillanders: AVhy too late? Mr. Ilarrop: For the school children, and for those coming in on business. On the motion of Mr. Mills, seconded by Mr. Harrop, the matter was referrcd bacK to the executive for era lion.
