A cable from London says Mr. Austen Chamberlain (Chancellor of the Ex chequer) refused the Vice-Royalty of Tndia, but pressure is being brought to induce him to reconsider his decision.

Mr. C. A. Ewen, general manager of the Commercial Union Assurance Co., and Mr. Sicli, London fire superintendent of the company,, arrived in New Plymouth on Saturday evening and leave for the soutli to-day by ear.

Mr. George John Fislier, a cousin of the late Lord Fisher, and a member of n well-known Christchurch family, died at Hamilton on Wednesday, at the age of 83. For many years past he had lived in the Thames Valley. Dr. Henry Shackleton, father of Sir Ernest Shackleton, the explorer, died at Sydenham, England, 011 August 2ii, at the age of 7.'!. He had been ill for some time. Dr. Shackleton, who was born at Moone, Kildare, and studied medicine at Trinity College, Dublin, had been in practice at Sydenham since he lirst went to England in ISSS until about four years ago, when lie retired. He left a widow and a large family, including eight daughters. Sir Ernest is his eldest son. -

The death i.s reported of Mr, C. J. Collins, of Te Puke, and formerly of To Kiri. Mr. Collins was a pioneer settler of Taranaki, having lived first in the district upwards of 42 years ago. He was well-known as a carrier on the llawera-Opunake road, and later settled at To Kiri, whence he removed to Te Puke seventeen years ago. Mr. 13. A. Collins, of Awatuna, chairman of the Awatuna dairy factory, is a son. The funeral took plaee at Opunake yesterday The employees of the New Plymouth Sash and Door Company gathered on Saturday morning to farewell Mr. H. L. Northern, foreman of the company's joinery factory for the past four years, and his son Fred, a member of the' company's office staff, hoth of whom are severing their connection with the company owing to (heir removal to Awakino, where Mr. Northern has purchased the store business that has been carried 011 for some years by .Mr. W. J. it. Avery. Mr. U. (>\ Kcid, manager of the company, expressed regret at losing 'heir valued services. Mr. Northern had taken charge at a difficult time, but his ability soon gained him the confidence and esteem of the directorate and his fellow employees. On behalf of the employees he then presented Mr. Northern with a clock and a photographic group of the employees, at the same time wishing him every success in his new venture. He also'paid a tribute to the services rendered by Mr. Fred.Northern, and presented him with a fountain pen. (
