VOTE OF TEACHERS.
APPOINTMENT BY GRADING. THE TARANAKI FIGURES The Minister for Education (the Hon. C. .1, Parr) informed' a Wellington Times representative on Sunday that he had reeeived_ the report of the scrutineers as to the result of the secret ballot of teachers taken 011 the proposal that all appointments of teachers shall he made by all Education Boards in accordance with the Dominion graded list. The result of the election, he stated, was:—'For the proposal, 22S:>; against, 70S; informal, 1!); majority for the proposal, 1455: In the various districts the voting in favor of the proposal was as follows:—Auckland, .ISO For and 291 against; Canterbury, ">lB for and :1G against; Ilawke's Bay, 202 to 22; Nelson, 07 to (i; Otago, 242 io 13.1; Southland 107 to 25; Taranaki, 121 to 18; Wanganni, 211 to OS; Wellington, 245 to 157; districts undefined, 1 against. Ballot-papers, added the Minister, were sent out to 3502 cert 1 Heated teachers, and 79.0 per cent, of these recorded votes, of which 1!) were intentionally invalid. Of the valid votes recorded, 74 per cent voted in favor oF the proposal. The teachers would be glad to know that the legislation forecasted in the ballotpaper had now been passed, and would come into effect on June Ist next, when it was hoped that the new system would contribute largely to the improvement of the conditions of the teaching service.
