ETJECTRICAL ENGINEER RESIGNS. November 1. Mr. E. F. Hollands, A.M.1.E.E., A.N.Z.S.C.E., electrical engineer and acting borough engineer to the Stratford Borough Council, tendered his resignation to the Mayor to-day. Mr. Hollands was appointed electrical engineer in January, 1918, and prior to that time was relieving engineer at Lake Coleridge (South Island). Previous to his appointment at Lake Coleridge he was engaged by the Imperial Government as engineer in charge of a munition factory in South Africa. He has aslced that bis resignation shall take effect from the end of January, 1921. STFATI'ORD COUNTY.
Nominations for the triennial election of members of the Stratford County Council, which is to take place on November 10, closed at noon yesterday. With the exception of the East riding, for which the sitting members (Messrs Walter and Were) have been declared elected unopposed, all the ridings will be contested. All the sitting members, with the exception of Cr. H. Worthington (Mangaehu riding), have been nominated Cr. Worthington having intimated his intention of retiring some months ago. Cr. E. Hancock (West riding) resigned a few months ago. An extraordinary lack, of interest has occurred in connection wjth the Hospital Board election, only one nomination, that of Mr. E. McK. Morison, having been received for the Ave seats. In the circumstances the new council will be called upon to appoint members for the tour vacant seats.

Mr. J. B. Hme has been appointed a member of a commission to inquire into and ascertain the best route for the North Auckland Main Trunk railway from Te Tio northwards, and the connecting line from the Kaihu Valley to the North Auckland Main Trunk railway. The other of tha commission are Messrs W. 'Ferguson, civil engineer, of Wellington, and .fames "egg, farmer, of Dunedin. An exciting runaway occurred in Broadway North this morning, fortunately without any serious consequences. The animal broke the wheel cham and bolted towards the town, the most exciting incident occurring when it jumped several hurdles placed across Broadway between Seyton and Regan streets, and dragging the cart through behind. Continuing its progress it narnowly averted colliding with a motor car and another cart before turning mto Regan .Street west. One of the Rovers, Mr. A. Cornwall, followed the runaway on horseback and pluckily caugnt hold of the reins, managing to »"ng it to a standstill opposite the saleyards in Miranda Street. Several of the hurdles in Broadway were broken, but no apparent, damage was done'to the horse, harness, or the cart. Very great interest was taken in the telegraph chess match between teams from the Egmont Club and Masterton Chess Club, which was commenced on Saturday evening. Thirteen players on each side participated, and the telegraph arrangements at Stratford were carried out by Mr. J. Brookes Greetings were exchanged between the presidents of the two clubs before the games commenced, the president of the Egmont Club stating that although it was the hrst telegraphed match held in Stratford ] le hoped many more similar matches would be arranged. The match will be completed next Saturday, the games being in an even-lookino-' state when play ceased on Saturday Sight During the month of October permits for the erection of six buildings bv the Stratford Borough Council. Ihe total rainfall in Stratford for the month of October, as recorded by the ofiicial observer (Mr. T. H. Pennj was 10.G4 inches, which is easily a record for an October month.
