Mr. James Seanlan and family, of New Plymouth, returned by the Rarawa

yesterday from a trip to Fiji. A Press Association telegram states that the Auckland University nominees for the Rhodes Scholarship are W. T. G. Airey, M.A., and P. 0 Veale, B.Se. Acting-Principal Warder H. W Glynn, of the New Plymouth Prison stall',' has been transferred in a similar capacity to the Auckland Prison, and left for the north by the Rarawa last night. His place at New Plymouth has been filled by Acting-Principal Warder R. W. Arnold, of Auckland.

In a list of candidates who were successful at the recent examinations at the Auckland University the following names appear:—Clare Terry, Latin Class 11, French Class 111., commercial French (oral test), pure mathematics Class III.; C. A. Noble. Latin Class I (Ist equal), English Class I. (2nd); J. M. Hinc, Latin Class 111., speaial LL.B course Class 111.; J. W. S. Jillett, Latin Class 111., English Class 111. The death of Mr. Lafayette Keith, who had been connected with oil boring operations in New Plymouth for some years yast, took place yesterday. The late Mr. Keith had not. been enjoying the best of health recently and his condition on Saturday last became worse and he was removed to the hospital on Thursday, where he died. He had been associated with drilling operations practically all his life, and had done a large amount of work in connection with prospecting for both water and oil in Canada and Australia. His first work in New Plymouth was I'ith the Bonithon Company, for whom he sunk a bore on the South Road, in the vicinity of Morsh'ead's nursery. He later took charge of the Taranaki Petroleum Company's operations in succession to Mr. Simpson, the company afterwards being known as the Taranaki (N.Z.) Oil Wells Company, Ltd., and Mr. Keith had been associated with their operations until the time of his death. His wife predeceased him many years ago and lie leaves no family. He was of a genial and friendly disposition and his death will be regretted by a large number of friends. '-s ,
