LINE FLOODED AT SHANNON,

EXPRESS ARRIVED THIS MORNINGf.

A washout on the railway line near Shannon caused serious interferenae with the running of the expresses on the New Plymouth-Wellington rout*, and as the line was under water the trains were held up. The express from Wellington did not reach New Plymouth till 1.15 this morning.

On tlio Hawera-New Plymouth sectioa the usual evening train from New Plymouth was delayed, taking up the running of the express in order to convejf passengers and mails through to New Plymouth. This train arrived here ,at y.l'ji, and the mails were Borted last night. Several trains on the WanganuiHawera section were cancelled owing, It is understood, to a washout at Kai IwL| SIX EXPRESSES DELAYED, PASSENGERS TRANSFERRED. BLOCKAGE NOT, CLEARED. There was a complete hold-up of all north and south traffic on the Manawatu line owing to flood water crossing the permanent way between Koputaroa ami Shannon. Six expresses— the Auckland, New Plymouth, and Napier (north and south each)—spent the greater part of the. day at Shannon and Levin. Fortunately the road remained passable, and the passengers were transferred by motor car from 'Shannon to Levin both ways. The south-bound Main Trunk passengers left Levin for Wellington about 5 o'clock, sis hours late.

Transferring is still in progress tonight, and there is no indication when through traffic will be possible. Five inches of rain haVe fallen during ths last three days.
