MT. EGMONT QUARRIES.
COJIP.LETIOX OF RAILWAY URGED. LOCAL OF METAL The necessity of the line to the Mt. Egmont quarries being opened up without delay was discussed at yesterday's meeting of the executive of the Tarnnaki Progress League. Mr. C. .). Belcher moved: "That in consideration of the urgent requirements of local bodies it is imperative that the allocation on the Estimates bo increased to au amount sufficient to complete the line without delay." This was seconded by Mr. E, Dixon. He stated that the local bodies had largely themselves to blame in the matter, as it seemed to him that they had been slack in entering into an agreement with the Government regarding supplies of metal. His own borough (Hawera) had been getting metal from Belmont, but the price of that metal had increased, as had also the railway charges. Mr. Belcher said he was getting disgusted with the delay of the Government in the matter. For one thing the price asked for the metal was too high, and the Government was making too manyi stipulations regarding supplies. Me thought the Government should go right ahead with the line, without waiting for local bodies to order supplies beforehand. The chairman (Mr. .T. \\\ McMillan) stated that the amount on the Estimates for t]\e line wns £7.500, which was not enough to complete it. The motion wns carried unanimously.
